South Australia is well represented in China, our largest two-way trading partner, by our trade and investment office in Shanghai, which opened in 2018, led by Ms Xiao-Ya Wei, Regional Director, Greater China. 

An office in Jinan and representation in Guangzhou, provides the facilitation business introductions, generating leads and business matching to help companies expand into the South Australian or Chinese markets.

Sector opportunities


South Australian exporters within the health and medical industries sector, can access opportunities for integrated health care and aged care systems due to China’s rapidly ageing population. Opportunities also exist within aged care services; research and development into the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases and workforce skills development and training.

As the world’s second largest buyer of imported food and beverages after the United States, South Australia’s reputation for premium quality food and beverages, provides opportunities to export seafood, fresh fruit such as citrus, table grapes and cherries, processed food, premium wine and craft beer.

Xiaoya has led the greater China team since November 2018. Prior to being South Australia’s Regional Director for the region, Xiaoya spent over 10 years in the Australian wool industry. As the chief representative of the Australian wool industry in China, she contributed to growth of the sector in its largest export market.

Javen commenced in July 2019 and is our Senior Business Development Manager based in our Shanghai office. Prior to his current role, Javen worked for Austrade Nanjing as Chief Commercial Representative and Austrade Guangzhou as Education Manager, leading the efforts in designing and implementing regional strategic planning and sector-specific initiatives to facilitate Australian goods and services exports to East and South China.
