South Australia exploring Canadian wine market

28 Feb 2023
Together with the Department for Trade and Investment and Wine Australia, 20 South Australian wineries are benefiting from participation through the Wine Export Recovery and Expansion in the Explore Canada Program 2023.

The program supports companies to diversify into new markets and grow sales of premium South Australian wines.

Throughout late January and February, a series of briefings on major Canadian markets with presentations from key monopoly buyers, importers/agents, on-premise, and private retail panels will provide a foundational understanding of the Canadian markets and the various channels within them.

The selected wineries participating in the program represent a combination of new to market and existing brands in some provinces looking for market expansion and intensification, progressive and traditional brands and styles, and a cross-section of regional diversity.

This program forms one of the many campaigns and grant opportunities to strengthen South Australian wine exports in priority developing and emerging markets.

Canada is the third largest destination market for South Australian wine exports.

In the year to November 2022, exports to Canada were valued at $139.3 million and represented 13 per cent of all South Australian wine exports.

The latest data also shows about 73 per cent of Australia’s wine exports to Canada came from South Australia.
